Paruthi VEerargal is a 2016 Tamil Movie released in Tamil language. It was directed by A.S. Ratheesh and produced by Bollywood actor Manoj Joshi under the banner of New Generation Creations. It features Mounish Mohan, Karunakaran Sekar, Jagan, Chandini Tamilarasan in the leading roles while Dhanush appears in an extended cameo role titled 'Appu'. The screenplay is written by Balaji Mohan and story is penned by Thiruvedaguru Vijayakumar. Music is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja while the cinematography is handled by M. S. Prabhu. The movie released on 13 June 2016. Paruthiveerargal is the story of a group of five friends, who are mistaken for Maoists, while they are actually activists trying to save their land from being acquired for a thermal power project. While on the run, two of them get separated from the others and end up in prison where one suffers multiple organ failure resulting in his death. The rest are later released after their land is acquired. For the rest of their lives, they are haunted by the trauma of the incident and are unable to move on.The director A.S. Ratheesh said that he was always fascinated by the story written by Thiruvedaguru Vijayakumar, that was published in Ananda Vikatan weekly many years ago about an innocent man who went into hiding after being falsely charged in a Maoist case. After giving almost 50 drafts to this story, he turned it into a screenplay and narrated it to his friend Manoj Joshi, who readily agreed to produce it. Music is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The soundtrack was released on 4 June 2016 by Karthik Subramaniam through his official YouTube channel. The film opened to mixed reviews from critics. While the performances of the lead cast were praised, the screenplay and editing were criticized as being sloppy, resulting in an overall rating of 2 out of 5 for the movie. The Times of India gave a rating of 2/5 and said "Ratheesh's Paruviveeran has a contrarian premise which is so audacious that it demands attention. But ultimately it is something of a letdown. The story never makes enough of an impact to justify the film's bold attempt". According to Sify, "With a rather similar plotline, Mounish Mohan's Paruthiveeran also has the ingredients of a social drama that are wrapped in some violent sequences. The rest are standard fare". The Hindu commented on the release by saying "the first half of Paruthiveeran is devoted to introducing the characters and their relationships.
